Todd Hoare named Associate Editor of the Chemical Engineering Journal
Highlights of the first Canadian version of HiBAR (Hirsch-Index Benchmarking of Academic Research)
were published in an article in the Globe and Mail Tuesday March 27 2012. Providing a broad
measurement of which researchers wield the most influence in their fields. It uses a large
database created by HESA (Higher Education Strategy Associates) of every Canadian university
faculty member, then creates an H-index score for each using raw data from Google Scholar.

Jie Yu named Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology
Dr. Jie Yu has been named as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, which is one of the prestigious journals in the process control society worldwide and publishes high-quality papers on technological advances in the design, realization, and operation of control systems. In addition, he also serves as Associate Editor of the IFAC Journal Control Engineering Practice.

2011 CSChE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LOCAL SECTION SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship consists of a certificate and $2,000 cash which will be presented at the 61st Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in London Ontario at the Student Banquet on Oct 24 2011. Jervis is a fifth year chemical engineering and management student in the Department. He has been very involved with the Chemical Engineering Society in both Canada and the US. This year, he was president of the McMaster University Chem- E- Car Team
He has also been very active within the McMaster University ChemicalEngineering Club, as vice president

Chris Swartz receives research money from the Province (ORF-RE)
It was announced on July 26, 2011 that three major projects at McMaster will receive more than
$5.6 million from the Province.
McMaster Advanced Control Consortium (MACC) Director, Chris Swartz, will lead an initiative to provide new mathematical models and technology to Canadian companies, focusing on sustainable process operations which are efficient, reliable, safe, use low amounts of raw materials and energy, and produce benign waste. Congratulations to Chris and the research group.
Bob Pelton has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC).
He will be inducted in November at a ceremony held in Ottawa.
"RSC Fellows are persons whose intellectual achievements have been exceptional through a body of publications, intellectual endeavors or creative activities exhibiting original contributions in the arts, humanities or sciences, as well as in public life. Election to the Society is the highest honour that can be attained by scholars, artists and scientists in Canada." Congratulations to Bob
John MacGregor receives R. S. Jane Memorial Award
John MacGregor is the recipient for this year's R.S. Jane Memorial Award. He will receive the award at the
CSChE's Annual Conference in London, Ontario, held October 23-26, 2011. Congratulations to John
Carlos Filipe receives President' Award for Excellence in Teaching
Carlos was the recipient of the 2011
President's Award for Exellence in Instruction
Carlos was presented with the award at the Faculty’s
Spring Convocation ceremony on Friday, June 17, 2011.

Graduate Student Recognition Day
Two Graduate students from our Department were chosen as recipients of awards: Nels Grauman Neander receives the GSA Honour Society (A Distinguished Service Award), Nels also receives the GSA Teaching Assistant Excellence Award. Mark Rattle receives the Mary Keyes Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service to McMaster. Awards will be presented on October 4th at the CIBC Hall (MUSC).

Early Research Award Recipients
Todd Hoare was the recipient of one of the ERA's awarded by the Ontario Government. These awards are given to recently appointed researchers to help them build their teams of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research associates. Each award is matched with $50,000 from the University. Todd's research project is: Biodegradable nano-engineered hydrogels for prolonged and targeted drug delivery
ORF-RI's
In addition, to the ERA awards, the Government of Ontario also announced its Ontario Research Funding-Research Infrastructure (ORF-RI) awards. Bob Pelton was an ORF-RI recipient and receives funding for his project:
